What Will You Learn?

  • Learn how body language affects perception and how to read other people.
  • Better understand how to control your own body language cues to make the best impression.
  • Reveal what physical cues and behaviors may signal deception.
  • Examine microexpressions and why they are so difficult to control.

Course Overview

A first impression can make or break a successful interaction, whether it’s in the office, at a party, or on a date. Before you speak or even shake hands, the first way you communicate with others is through body language and facial expression. Consider just a few of the messages you are sending to someone upon first look: Do you exude confidence, or are you visibly nervous? Are your shoulders pulled back and your posture straight, or do you have your hands shoved in your pockets? Do you make eye contact, or shift your gaze around the room?

Join CreativeLive instructor and body language expert Vanessa Van Edwards to learn how to use nonverbal communication to become the most memorable person in any room. In The Power of Body Language, Ms. Van Edwards will show you how to read people by gauging their visual cues, how to use body language to your advantage in meetings, and how to tell if people are lying. Ms. Van Edwards will even cover voice modulation so you can impress clients in phone conversations, as well as “statement analysis” to help you write powerful emails, website copy, and even business cards. By the end of the 27 lectures in this course, you’ll be able to identify exactly what impression your verbal and nonverbal language is giving, and how to make a powerful, positive impact on everyone around you.

What Are You Saying?

Self-assessment is an important tool when determining the impression that you make and how to adjust your behaviors to present yourself in the best way possible. To that end, you begin your exploration of nonverbal communication by learning more about yourself, what you want to accomplish, and how to make adjustments to your current habits. Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to practice through exercises and assessments that will help you understand the many facets of nonverbal communication in different environments and scenarios. Ms. Van Edwards also teaches you how to read other people, looking at facial expressions and body language and focusing on what they convey about confidence, fear, comfort, deception, and more.

When you know the impression you are making, you gain the power to control your nonverbal reactions in a wide variety of situations and present a more confident, self-assured face to the world. With Ms. Van Edward’s help, you can even learn to have better control over reactions that would usually be involuntary. By the time you have completed this course, you will have a solid understanding of how to:

  • Master nonverbal communication;
  • Make better first impressions;
  • Increase your confidence;
  • Decode other people’s emotions;
  • Spot deception;
  • Modulate your voice; and more.

With these tools at your disposal, you will learn how to be a better communicator and a more attentive listener. Whether you want to impress your boss, make new friends, or simply be more comfortable in social situations, effective nonverbal communication can help improve both your business and personal relationships.

Be Memorable

Body language is not just about being better understood; it’s also about creating a positive image for yourself and your business. Your ability to present yourself in the best possible way from the very start of any interaction will play a crucial role in how people remember you and how likely they are to trust you.

Read the Room

While it’s true that there are cultural and generational differences in the way people present themselves, there are also universal elements of nonverbal communication that everyone experiences and everyone can learn to identify. Facial expressions are one of these elements—no matter where you go, humans express emotions like happiness, confusion, or fear on their faces in the same identifiable ways. Understanding these expressions can enable you to read situations better; they can also help you notice subtle cues known as microexpressions that can be the key to spotting a lie.

Knowing when someone is trying to deceive you is certainly a useful tool, but what about being honest and clear in your own nonverbal communications? As you will learn, successful interactions can be derailed by dishonesty, especially lies of omission. When you are afraid someone may ask a difficult question or broach a painful subject, your body language can reveal your discomfort and set you up for an awkward exchange. Ms. Van Edwards shows why being upfront about potential issues and being open to acknowledging them can ensure smoother communication and make conversation much easier.

Small things—such as what your face and body say when you are omitting the truth—demonstrate exactly why reading the facial and behavioral cues of those around you is a vital key to successful communication. Equally important is understanding what you are saying with your gestures and expressions. Are you nodding impatiently? Tapping your foot? Breaking eye contact frequently? You may not always realize you are doing these things, but you would certainly notice if someone else communicated “bored” or “irritated” in such a clear manner. As you progress through The Power of Body Language, you will become more aware of—and in control of—these and other “tells.”

Your Best You

Ms. Van Edwards doesn’t limit her guidance to just reading facial expressions or looking at body language. The Power of Body Language also provides you with a guide to creating and honing your personal brand by applying your knowledge of behavior and personal image to other facets of your life and work. You will also learn:

  • Negotiation tips,
  • Best practices for email, phone, and other communication,
  • How to use body language in photography, and
  • Communication “hacks” that give you an edge.

Filmed with a live audience, The Power of Body Language is designed as an ongoing conversation, incorporating questions and audience experience into each lesson. An ideal combination of practical and theoretical elements, this course will allow you to not only better understand the concepts behind nonverbal communication, but to also better practice what you learn every day.

The Power of Body Language is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Far MORE useful information than expected ….and after 70 years I thought I knew this stuff. If you think you can just MIRROR the body language of someone else, well HA! -- everybody does that (and it’s a joke). How about learning some REAL substance instead? I’ve learned that “beauty & brains” are nice – but can sometimes be boring. However with added personal warmth, organization & charisma – that describes Vanessa. She’s beyond awesome. I’d give her course 6 stars. This classroom setting with lecture, questions and participation from the audience was the reason I took 25 pages of notes. WOW – it made me realize where I’d blown it in the past, plus answered [superbly] some personal situations years back. This is one of those courses so crammed with information that intellectually – you can’t just give it mental ascent. Instead, you have to WATCH it (visual, you know?) many times over to SEE (and practice) it yourself. Take note TGC: Yes – I’d buy ANY course from this teacher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never the same The review by 'The Professor Michigan' is spot on. The is the best course I have seen by the Great Courses. The instructor teaches the theory or research, give concrete examples of what she is covering, and gives practice doing and evaluating what she has covered. Using the students in her class she shows the development and progress they have made. You will never be able to go into a social situation again, after viewing this course, and be unaware of what is going on non-verbally. This is a great course taught by an excellent instructor who models everything she is teaching.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a MUST See Course!! OUTSTANDING!! The Power of Body Language is a course/training session which is a must see for everyone; not just in a business setting but for life. The instructor, Vanessa Van Edwards, is riveting and an absolute pleasure to watch and present a topic I have studied for decades; reading peoples body language. You will not find an instructor more personally dynamic and an exemplar in this area than Vanessa. This course presents a different type class setting than the usual The Great Courses lecture sets. It is very interactive with six business professionals (students) participating in personal development scenarios as Vanessa walks through the course topic for that session. The class sessions vary in duration from 14 to 54 minutes, with the typical session about 30 minutes. Key areas of discussion were, micro expressions, lie detection, creating your own personal elevator pitch, non-verbal cues, negotiation tips, and many others keys to reading peoples reaction to your personal communication. Vanessa also provides her website to gain more topic insights and a lengthy bibliography for additional study. There are ZERO negatives about this course. If one was to thoroughly dive into this course and master the knowledge, they should be able to understand and influence personal/business interactions. I have used these methods for almost 40 years in law enforcement, as an adjunct professor (125 classes) (leadership, ethics, management, homeland security..). This course is Outstanding!! I have purchased over 300 Great Courses lecture sets and this is in the top 5%!
